Why Is Craft Beer So Popular?

There are approximately 2,000 microbreweries in the UK who produce craft beer. In recent years its popularity has boomed. As well as the large numbers of people who produce it, even more people flock to craft breweries to experience this experimental tipple for themselves.

If you’ve ever been to a craft beer brewery, you’ll know there’s something distinctly different about the whole experience. Could this be a clue as to why craft beer is so popular? Let’s find out.

What Is Craft Beer?

Craft beer is produced by small-time breweries who are known as craft breweries. It’s fair to say that craft beer is not your standard Heineken or Budweiser. It’s called ‘craft beer’ because the brewers want to be deliberately ambiguous. Its secret nature is all part of the magic and means the brewers can tailor the recipes as they see fit. However, the general definition of craft beer is a beer that is produced by independent brewers, often within a community setting.

Although the exact ingredients and flavours of craft beer vary widely, one thing that remains consistent is the brewer’s passion for what they do. They are involved in every step of the process and constantly look to adapt and improve on their recipe. Essentially, it’s all about people who love beer making said beer. A characteristic of craft beer is the colourful artwork that often adorns the bottle.

Examples of craft beer in a brewery

There’s going to the pub for a pint, and then there’s going to a craft beer brewery for a pint. Both have their own merits, but there’s something about craft breweries that make the experience far more rustic. Craft beer breweries have sprung up across the country, and often they create a real people-orientated feel.

Taking Docks Beers in Grimsby as an example, the brewery is housed in a disused church. They hold live events as well as food festivals, offering something unique to the local scene. This same mantra is repeated in craft breweries across the UK. People flock to them for the laid back experience and community spirit that isn’t always present in the likes of chain pubs or bars. Even the batch of beer they sample will differ depending on when you visit, due to the constantly evolving recipes.

Ultimately, it’s the experience as well as the experimental feel to the drink itself that makes craft beer so popular. The varying mixtures and production methods give you a whole new appreciation for beer. Plus, it’s a great feeling to know you’re supporting local independent businesses with every sip.
