Is Red Wine Good For you?

While consuming alcohol isn’t quite the same as eating fruit and vegetables, there are some surprising health benefits to various tipples that people swear by. For example, when you are feeling under the weather a hot toddy made with whisky is often the drink of choice. Another drink that’s been subject to much medical research is wine, namely whether it is good for you or not.

In today’s post, we will be looking into the research a little further. Here’s everything you need to know about is wine good for you.

Antioxidants

Red wine is considered as one of the many foods and drinks that are a good source of antioxidants. The reason why we need antioxidants in our diet is that they help fight free radicals. Antioxidants prevent cellular damage which happens because of inflammation or oxidative stress. Red grapes which make up red wine contain a much higher amount of antioxidants compared with white wine.

The skin of a grape is also packed with an antioxidant called resveratrol, which has been shown to improve eyesight, fight cancer, protect the brain as well as the heart. Resveratrol is also anti-ageing and also helps to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. It’s also a key element of the Mediterranean diet, which is famed for being healthy and promoting a long life.

Other Health Benefits

Red wine was also linked to a study which showed that consuming it boosts mental health. The secret ingredient was once again resveratrol, which alongside its other health benefits, has been proved to reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression. This is despite alcohol usually being considered a depressant.

Another benefit was an improvement in gut health. Red wine can be beneficial in promoting the growth of good bacteria. Our guts are made up of billions of bacteria, both good and bad. If the bad starts to outweigh the good, then several digestive related issues can occur. In conjunction with a healthy diet and probiotics, red wine may also keep the good bacteria topped up.

Everything In Moderation

Despite red wine containing a powerful blend of antioxidants, it’s still alcohol at the end of the day. So to reap the benefits of red wine, you need to make sure you stay within a healthy limit. Both men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units of alcohol in a week.

A large glass of wine (250ml) would equal 3 units a week, and so would fall below the guidelines. Though if you were to drink the same every evening, that would equal 21 units a week, and a whopping 1,575 calories.

If in doubt, always check the labels before you order a bottle of wine. You can buy a smaller bottle size too. Another great tip is to use an alcohol unit calculator to make sure you are staying within the recommended limits. If you are struggling to control the amount you drink, then you should consult your GP or Alcoholics Anonymous. Alternatively, consider going to Alcohol Aversion therapy. Places like OKRehab can help you through this process.

If you are looking to cut down on the amount of alcohol you consume, we also sell an alcohol-free red grape drink too.

To Sum Up

While you do need to carefully watch the number of units you drink, there’s no doubt that red wine has an abundance of health benefits. Like all dark fruits, it is rich in antioxidants which help produce healthy cell turnover and fight off free radicals which could cause our cells harm.

When consumed in moderation, red wine is most certainly good for you. Here at Bring Me Drink, we sell a large selection of alcoholic beverages including red wine. If you need any help or advice on picking the right one for a particular occasion or meal, then do get in touch and we’d be pleased to assist you.
