Mojito

A mojito is the kind of beverage to enjoy when you want to get into that holiday spirit. One that with every sip, will transport you to white sands and azure seas. A place where music is played in the streets while the sun beats down on the pavement. All while everyone is letting loose and thinking about anything but work.

Here in Blighty, we’re not always blessed with the best weather. However, that doesn’t mean to say you can’t create that feeling of warmer climbs even in your living room! A cocktail will allow you to do just that, and this week we will teach you how to make your very own mojito at home.

With thirsts ready to be quenched, here is everything you need to know about how to make a mojito.

The History Of The Mojito

There are various discrepancies when it comes to who actually invented the mojito. Some historians think that in the 1500s, an associate of Sir Francis Drake invented it following an unsuccessful invasion in search of gold. The tale paints the mojito as a concoction formed as a solution to scurvy which his crew were suffering with.

However, another popular theory that has a lot of weight to it, is that the mojito was invented at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana, Cuba. While many believe this to be a ruse, the likes of Pope Francis and even the Chinese president have made the trip to the bar in recent years due to the plausibility of the story.

While the real truth may never be uncovered, it’s clear that the mojito has a long history that has seen this rum-based cocktail be enjoyed for centuries across the world.

What You’ll Need

  • A tall glass
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Demerara sugar cube
  • Syrup
  • Lime juice
  • Mint leaves
  • White mum
  • Mineral or soda water

Recipe

There are only 5 main ingredients needed to make a mojito and these include rum, lime, mint, sugar and water. This makes it far easier to make than most cocktails, meaning you can enjoy it anytime without having to have tonnes of ingredients on hand!

1. To start you are going to need to juice your limes, and depending on whether you’re making a single glass or a large pitcher, this will determine how many you need to juice. Usually, 3-4 limes are good for a small pitcher. Remember, the limes will be filling most of the glass, so the more the merrier!

2. Grab your cocktail shaker and add 2 ounces of white rum, your lime juice, half an ounce of syrup and a large handful of mint leaves. Add some ice into the shaker which will help break up the mint leaves to release all that flavour. Put the lid on the cocktail shaker and give it a good shake.

3. Give the mixture a double strain as you want to be sure to remove all traces of mint leaves. On the second strain, have the glass underneath the strainer so that the mixture goes straight into it.

4. Place your mixture into the glass along with some ice cubes and a single demerara sugar cube, which will add a lovely texture at the end. Top the glass up either with mineral water or soda water. Finish with some mint sprigs before serving the finished drink to your guests.

Top Tips

The number one rule of cocktail making is to prepare your glass. It really helps to do this before you start to mix up your ingredients so that the drink can be poured straight onto the ice and kept at the optimum temperature. So grab your glass, fill it with ice and your sugar cube and you’ll be good to go!

How you finish off a cocktail can make all the difference too. For example, before placing the mint sprigs in as a garnish, you can clap them between your hands which will release an aromatic burst of mint that will waft towards your guests as you approach them.

As a mojito contains lime, it’s also a great idea to place a wedge of lime onto the side of the glass. Doing so will add a professional bartender finish to your drink.
