How To Make An Espresso Martini
When you can’t decide between a cocktail or a coffee it’s quite the quandary. On the one hand, you want to unwind with a spirit such as vodka. At the same time, it’s only the middle of the day or you might just be feeling in need of a pick-me-up towards the end of the night. All hail the espresso martini.
Born in the heart of London’s West End, the espresso martini was created on a whim as a happy accident. Today it is one of the most popular cocktails bartenders conjure up. The great news is that you don’t have to head out to get one either.
Here is everything you need to know about how to make an espresso martini.
The History Of The Espresso Martini
An espresso martini has quite a short history in the cocktail stakes having been invited only some 40 years ago. However, don’t mistake being the new kid on the block for being anything less than incredible. Especially as it’s one of the rare cocktails that allow you to have a hit of caffeine along with your alcohol.
It all started with a British bartender called Dick Bradsell. He was once working in a Soho Brasserie when an unnamed model walked in, requesting a drink that would wake them up. Being a brasserie, it just so happened that there was a coffee machine next to where Dick was serving drinks. It was at that moment that he got the ingenious idea to fuse a cocktail with coffee and the espresso martini was born.
The espresso martini is also known as a vodka espresso or a pharmaceutical stimulant. Each of the three names gives a different take on the recipe too. For example, some bartenders finish up the drink by placing three coffee beans on top of the foam in a petal formation.
What You’ll Need
The first ingredient you’ll need to make is vanilla sugar, which quite simply you create by putting sugar and a vanilla pod into a blender. Blitz it for 30 seconds and it will form a sweet aromatic mixture. Grab your bar spoon, and add one and a half lots of your vanilla sugar into a tall or regular glass.
Next, add a double espresso to your espresso machine and then into the mixture. There are espresso machines that are tiny enough to fit over the mixer tin, which can make this step a lot more practical versus a traditional machine. Add in your coffee liqueur, followed by the vodka. Give everything a good stir using your bar spoon. The heat of the espresso should help this step along.
Add in a very large portion of ice and then place your metal mixing tin over the glass. Secure the tin by twisting it into place, and give the mixture a very good shake for at least 15 seconds. Twist the glass and the tin apart and place a Hawthorne strainer over the tin. Pick up the tin and tip it upside down, straining the mixture into a martini glass. Top up the glass until a nice foam appears at the top and it’s ready to serve.
One of the best ways to chill your glass is to fill it with crushed ice before you start. Place it to one side and empty the ice out of the glass when you are ready to pour the drink in.
Twisting the glass out of the metal tin can be a bit tricky to master. It helps if you use the force of your palms to lock it and unlock it out of place. Make sure the two are joined together before you start, otherwise you’ll be wearing your espresso martini rather than drinking it!
